Waukesha County Cuts Board, Increases Budget...

From this story in the MJS:

Citing the uncertainty of Waukesha County Board downsizing, supervisors endorsed a plan Tuesday to freeze board salaries for two years while raising the chairman's pay about $3,000 a year.

As the only county supervisor who works full time, the chairman is elected every two years by the board to oversee a staff of eight people.

Under the committee's plan, the position's salary would increase 3% next year and another 3% the following year, climbing from $55,223 to $58,586 a year. Other supervisor salaries would remain frozen at $9,536.

So, let's look at the savings of cutting the board:

Board Chair: $58,586
24 Supervisors: $228,864
8 Staffers: $320,000 (estimate @ $40,000/year)

Total for a smaller board: $607,450

Winnebago's entire County Board budget: $110,000 (approx - I will update when I look at a budget book)

The Chair makes an extra $5,000 over the rest of the supervisors. I might make $2,000 this year total.

There are no savings for a smaller board.

Jeff,

$2000 a year is a ridicisozulously small stipend for the work that a good county supervisor does, I would support doubling your salary if the board size was reduced. The idea of reducing the size of the county board isn't about saving money it's about getting better representation. If the committee structure changed and the pay increased we hopefully would get better candidates.

We will not get better representation by having fewer positions! Fewer positions will result in power being consolidated and everyday people will have less of a voice in government. We do not need that!

I would beg to differ, even if we consolidated the districts 2 for 1 reducing the supervisors in half, their districts would be only 1/2 the size of the districts of a City of Neenah Alderman. Are you saying that city aldermen are not "everyday people"?

The majority of the problem with county government is that it’s a good old boys network of retired men, and the committee structure is set up so that a working person would have a very difficult time attending. Committees need to be consolidated, meeting times moved to the evening, and a more diverse group of people needs to run the show. We could easily run county government with less people, higher pay, less committee assignments, and meetings at times that working people could attend would encourage better people to run.

?????? Isn't this just a matter of rescheduling meetings so those people that work during the day can attend these meetings and get involved? Why would we reduce committeess (putting more work on people that are willing to give of their time)and still expect to get a "more diverse group of people"?

When you say we "could easily run county government with less people, higher pay, less committee assignments . . . " what are you basing that on? Is that a guess?

Let's keep the board size the way it is (and save the $$$) and simply mandate meetings be held in the evenings (let's say 6:00 p.m.)
